Nagpur: Administrator of the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), Dr Vinky Rughwani, unequivocally stated that the MMC will not grant registrations to homeopaths who complete a certificate course in modern pharmacology from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) and subsequently seek an MMC registration number which is exclusively reserved for modern medicine practitioners.
As a quasi-judicial entity, the MMC bears the responsibility of regulating medical education and upholding ethics within the state. It oversees approximately 1.8 lakh doctors and processes around 9,000 registrations annually. Although a BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) doctor can prescribe allopathic medicines upon completing a certificate course in modern pharmacology from MUHS, and the MMC Act contains a provision mandating such doctors to obtain affiliation and registration with the MMC, Dr Rughwani asserted that this could constitute injustice to modern medicine practitioners.
Furthermore, Dr Rughwani unveiled several pioneering initiatives undertaken by the MMC for the benefit of doctors in the state. Notable among these is the development of a mobile application named ‘Know Your Doctor’, designed to authenticate the credentials of doctors registered in Maharashtra. This groundbreaking app will provide comprehensive information about doctors and will be accessible to the general public, positioning the MMC as the first council to develop such an application for patients.
The impetus behind the app’s development stems from the alarming rise in unqualified medical practitioners treating patients. An MMC official emphasised the paramount importance of this initiative, particularly in the wake of the pandemic, as individuals can easily masquerade as doctors by presenting fraudulent medical certificates and licences.
